Candidates of Mumbai South constituency in 2014 Lok Sabha elections

The Mumbai South constituency candidates for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections are mostly well known election faces. During the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate Jayawantiben Mehta had won hands down with 2,44,945 votes. INC candidate Murli Deora was far behind, with 34,702 votes, as was Aziz Lalani of the Samajwadi Party with 19,128 votes. The scenario was reversed in the next elections in 2009, when Deora won with 1,37,956 votes, with Mehta not too far behind, bagging 1,27,710 votes.

This year, sitting MP Murli Deora will have a far more tough battle. He is not only facing strong candidates from the usual political parties, but also from the newly formed AAP party.

Names of Candidates of Mumbai South constituency
1. Congress: Milind Deora

2. MNS: Bala Nandgaonkar

3. NDA: Arvind Sawant (Shiv Sena party)

4. AAP: Meera Sanyal

5. CPI: Prakash Reddy

What to expect
Although Congress has a good hold in the areas of Colaba, Byculla and Mumbadevi, the same is not the case in other pockets of the constituency. The Shiv Sena and MNS have staunch voting support in Worli and Shivadi areas, while the BJP dominates in the affluent Malabar Hill area.

Murli Deora became the youngest MP in India on winning this constituency seat in 2009. While youth and a corruption-free image is very much in his favour, those who are not too happy about the Congress rule in the seat of power may go for some other party's candidate.

MNS candidate Bala Nandgaonkar is considered to be the strongest candidate this time, being a close aide of MNS chief Raj Thackeray. He has also been MLA four times. Everyone was stunned when he defeated Chhagan Bhujbal in 1995.

Arvind Sawant of the Shiv Sena party is MTNL employee's union leader & a deputy leader of the party.

Meena Sanyal is likely to swing votes in her favour, having done so earlier too while standing as an independent candidate in the previous elections. She has projected a clean image and is this time contesting as an AAP candidate.

Prakash Reddy is possibly the least known candidate. He is the secretary of the CPI party's Mumbai unit.
