As part of the investigating team which checks out a crime scene, Mumbai Police has a special dog squad for the Crime Branch. There is also a dog squad as part of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS). The plan this year is to include women personnel, too, as handlers for the dog squad and about a dozen of the personnel have been selected for training to join the dog squad.
It was thus thrilling to see the dogs with their handlers on the Mumbai Police float at the 2019 Republic Day celebrations at Shivaji Park, Mumbai.
The float's hoardings brought out the various aspects of the Mumbai Police force, under three 'E's, namely, Enforcement, Engineering and Education. For enforcement, there are various teams and cells focusing on specific tasks. These cells include the Quick Reaction Team, the Anti-Narcotics Cell, a cell to tackle cyber crime, the dog squad, the BDDS, etc.
The Dog Squad
The police personnel handled their dogs very well, with none of the dogs leaping out of their handlers' arms or even barking at the spectators. Well done!
On the engineering front, there were pictures displayed on how crimes can be captured on CCTV cameras and speeding violations on the road can be trapped by speed cameras.
Educationwise, the Mumbai police create awareness campaigns on safety and security for the public and also visit educational institutions for the same. This aspect was brought out on the float as well, through pictures, about not talking on the mobile and driving, not honking, wearing helmets when riding a two-wheeler, etc. One humorous alert was to respect the Zebra crossing at junctions, with the caption that even Batman's Mobile would have to stop behind those white stripes!
On the float were also some Road Safety Patrol (R.S.P.) cadets. Some schools have these R.S.P. units, wherein they are trained on road safety and act as volunteers at traffic junctions in the city on certain occasions.
As you can see from the photos above, the float of the Mumbai Police was a unique one!
